What is Radial Shockwave Therapy (rESWT)?
What Is Radial Shockwave Therapy?
A Non-Surgical Treatment That Helps Chronic Soft Tissue Problems Heal
Radial Shockwave Therapy (rESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses controlled acoustic pressure waves to stimulate healing in chronically irritated or damaged tissues. The waves spread outward from the tip of the applicator, making radial shockwave ideal for treating larger, more superficial regions of soft tissue such as tendons, ligaments, fascia, and muscle.
As the handheld device is applied to the skin over the involved area, the sound waves trigger a biological response known as mechanotransduction. This process:
- Increases local blood flow and oxygen delivery
- Helps break down scar tissue and small calcifications
- Stimulates tissue repair and collagen production
- Decreases chronic inflammation and swelling
- Influences pain pathways to reduce sensitivity
Treatments typically last 5–10 minutes and require no medications, no anesthesia, and no downtime. Most patients notice gradual improvement over a series of visits as mobility increases and pain decreases.
Conditions Radial Shockwave Therapy Can Help
Radial shockwave therapy is especially useful for chronic musculoskeletal conditions that have not responded well to rest, medication, injections, or standard physical therapy and exercise alone.
Foot & Ankle
- Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
- Heel spurs
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Peroneal tendinopathy
- Chronic ankle pain
- Morton’s neuroma (for pain reduction)
Knee
- Patellar tendinopathy (“jumper’s knee”)
- Quadriceps tendinopathy
- IT band–related pain and tightness
- Non-acute scar tissue and stiffness around the knee
Hip & Pelvis
- Gluteus medius/minimus tendinopathy
- Greater trochanteric pain syndrome
- Piriformis-related pain
- Proximal hamstring tendinopathy
Shoulder
- Rotator cuff tendinopathy
- Calcific tendinopathy (breaking down calcium deposits)
- Biceps tendinopathy
- Adhesive capsulitis (“frozen shoulder”) as part of a mobility program
Elbow & Wrist
- Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
- Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis)
- De Quervain’s tenosynovitis
- Chronic wrist or forearm tendon pain
Spine & Myofascial Pain
Because the energy disperses radially instead of into a single deep point, radial shockwave can be comfortably used around the spine for soft-tissue–driven pain patterns:
- Chronic low back pain from myofascial trigger points
- Muscle adhesions along the spine
- Long-standing scar tissue and fascial tightness
- Myofascial pain related to sacroiliac joint stress
Other Applications
- Chronic muscle knots and trigger points
- Myofascial pain syndromes in various regions
- Improving mobility in stiff joints by addressing surrounding soft tissues
- Supporting recovery from sports and overuse injuries
- Enhancing and reinforcing the effects of chiropractic adjustments
Why Many Patients Choose Radial Shockwave Therapy
Radial Shockwave Therapy is popular in chiropractic and sports medicine settings because it is:
- Non-invasive and drug-free
- Performed in the office with no downtime
- Designed for stubborn, long-standing conditions
- Often helpful in reducing the need for injections or surgery
Clinical research shows high rates of improvement in many chronic tendon and soft tissue conditions when an appropriate course of shockwave care is followed and combined with corrective exercise and postural restoration.
Is Radial Shockwave Therapy Right for You?
Not everyone is a candidate for shockwave, and certain conditions may require a different approach. During your visit, we will review your health history, examine the involved area, and determine whether Radial Shockwave Therapy is appropriate as part of your individualized care plan.
If you have been living with persistent pain and want a safe, drug-free, and evidence-based solution, radial shockwave therapy may be an important step in helping your body finally heal.
