Functional Exercises to Support Your Chiropractic Care

Exercise for your joints and muscles—just like brushing your teeth for your gums.

Functional exercises play a vital role in our patients' success. Think of them like brushing your teeth twice a day—not for your teeth and gums, but for your muscles and joints. Just as maintaining healthy teeth involves both daily brushing and regular professional cleanings at the dentist, your musculoskeletal health requires more than just chiropractic treatments.

Functional exercises complement your chiropractic care, enhance your recovery, improve your mobility, and reduce your risk of future flare-ups. These are movements that mimic real-life activities and are designed to help you move better in your everyday life—not just in the gym.

In the context of recovery and continued health, functional exercises are used to restore and enhance movement patterns that may have been affected by injury, surgery, or inactivity. They help restore mobility and flexibility by regaining the range of motion lost due to prolonged sitting, poor posture, or physical limitations.

Additionally, functional exercises build strength in key muscle groups that support your spine and major joints. This helps with everyday movements such as walking, lifting, reaching, bending, and getting in and out of a chair. They also improve stability and balance, reducing the risk of falls and enhancing coordination—especially important for older adults or individuals recovering from injuries.

By reinforcing proper movement patterns, functional exercises lower the risk of re-injury and help prevent repetitive strain. When combined with chiropractic adjustments, postural correction, and lifestyle changes, they promote overall physical fitness and long-term well-being.

Do all patients do their functional exercises? They do if they want to achieve the best possible outcome.

At our office, we carefully assess each case to determine the appropriate regimen of functional exercises tailored to your condition, age, and activity level. We provide clear instructions, demonstrate the movements, and supply printed handouts when appropriate so you can safely perform them at home.

To make it even easier, we are developing online video demonstrations that you can follow along with from the comfort of your home. This helps you stay consistent between visits and reinforces what we do in the office, so your progress continues even after you leave the treatment room.

Functional exercises are not “one more thing to do”—they are an essential part of protecting your investment in your health, helping your adjustments hold longer, and allowing you to move with greater ease and confidence in your daily life.
