What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy, or nerve damage, occurs when nerves become injured, dysfunctional, or destroyed, leading to pain, numbness, weakness, or abnormal sensations.

It occurs when there is decreased blood supply accompanied by altered nerve function due to damage and loss of the myelin sheath, which is the protective covering of the nerves, often complicated by lack of proper nutrition.

One of the most common causes is diabetes, where high blood sugar levels over time damage nerves, especially in the hands and feet. This condition, known as diabetic peripheral neuropathy, also affects small blood vessels that supply oxygen and nutrients to nerves, worsening the damage.

Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome can also cause neuropathy by triggering inflammation that attacks nerve tissue. Certain infections like shingles, Lyme disease, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis can directly damage nerves, leading to neuropathic symptoms.

Vitamin deficiencies, particularly in B12, B6, B1 (thiamine), and E, are another contributing factor. B12 deficiency, in particular, can lead to irreversible nerve damage if left untreated.

Chronic alcohol consumption can further exacerbate neuropathy by causing nutritional deficiencies and directly harming nerves, resulting in pain, tingling, and muscle weakness, especially in the legs and feet.

Exposure to toxins, including heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and mercury, as well as industrial chemicals and pesticides, can also contribute to nerve damage. Certain medications, such as chemotherapy drugs, some antibiotics, and statins, may have neuropathy as a side effect.

Kidney failure is another cause, as it leads to the buildup of toxins in the bloodstream that can harm nerves, a condition known as uremic neuropathy. Similarly, liver disease can contribute to neuropathy by causing vitamin deficiencies and metabolic imbalances.

Physical trauma or repetitive stress injuries, such as those seen in carpal tunnel syndrome, can compress or damage nerves, leading to localized neuropathy. Some inherited disorders, such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, also cause progressive nerve damage and muscle weakness.

Additionally, hormonal imbalances like hypothyroidism can slow down nerve function, leading to tingling, numbness, and weakness.
